    History & Achievements :

BIOGRAPHY: Samuel b1797 Tiverton Devon joined up in Bristol the 4th Foot otherwise known as The Kings Own 22/8/1826. He left in Devon his wife Ann Hutchins and Samuel b 1820 d 1831, John b 1821 whereabouts unknown, Roger b 1823, Mary Ann b 1825 and Charles b 1827. They did not come with him. You are not going to like the next bit but I am certain of the facts. Samuel went off to serve in Portugal, Ireland and England. I think it was in Ireland that he picked up another wife Ann (Sarah Ann) Martin who he brought to Australia as his wife. He arrived in 26/11/1831 as a Sergeant/Schoolmaster on board a convict ship _Surrey) guarding the prisoners. He and Ann Martin had James b 1831, Theodore b 1835 and Henry ames b 1837. Apart from being stationed in Sydney he spent  a couple of years on Norfolk  (33,34) acting as schoolmaster to children of the Regiment. He was actually part of the vanguard of a small number of troops sent ahead of the Regiment which arrived in 1831 to set up the ground work before the arrival of the main body. The regiment was notified that they were to ship to India and he wisely took a discharge in 31/12/1834.  He held the position of Parish Clerk St Lukes Liverpool NSW 1835 to 1837. He received
a grant of 22 acres (8/2/1836) somewhere around Bankstown and I think he may have sold it as he had enough money to purchase the licence of  the Sir William Pitt hotel 1837.
