History
& Achievements :
Stephen Partridge began his
military career as a member of the 46th Regiment . Stephen was stationed onboard
the ship "General Hewitt" prior to its leaving England. It was on this ship that
he arrived in Australia in 1814. He transferred to the 48th Regiment when the
46th was transferred to India. Whilst in the colony he became an overseer
of the lumber yards. He was appointed the Superintendant of Convicts and Public
Works in Port Macquarie where he reported on the construction of many of the
early buildings in the area. In 1828 as a result of a Commissioner's Enquiry
Report his conduct came under fire as trafficking with convicts in the use of
Government grain. He resigned his position as
Superintendant applied for and obtained a licence as the Land lordship
of " New Inn " and held the licence for 3 years Stephen was granted 640
acres in the area now known as Thrumpster ,located on the
Oxley Highway 10kilometres from Port
Macquarie. Later selling the land to Major A.C.Innes, Stephen held some
smaller grants in the area.
During his time with the 46th he accompanied John Oxley
on sever expeditions
