- History &
Achievements :
BTW, there is a village halfway between Manchester
and Warrington named Partington, and I believe the surname is quite common
around there. However, I've been told that the redcoat James Partington was
born in Gloucestershire, and his birth date is supposedly closer to 1824.
According to a site I saw the other day, his father was Robert Partington, and
his mother Frances. BTW2, from what I can find, he was the only soldier
ancestor of mine, although I have 5 convicts in total on both sides of the
family. BTW3, his son (also James Partington) married Charlotte Warburton
Pearce in 1868. Charlotte was descended from the Hepburn's, who claim Rob Roy
Macgregor as an ancestor
We believe that James
was born around 1826 in England and came to Australia as a convict guard
aboard the Egyptian in 1843. He was sent to Van Dieman's Land as a convict
guard and stationed at Brighton west of Hobart. He married in Mary Ann
Crosswell in 1848 and she had a son in 1849 my g grandfather also James
Partington. Tragically Mary Ann herself the daughter of a convict appears to
have died in child birth and the child was brought up by Mrs Sharpe in
Pontville. James Partington (the father) seems to have disappeared after the
death of his wife - no further records of him have been found. His son James
went on to have 9 children of whom the youngest Preston Pearce was my
grandfather. His brothers were outstanding musicians and won many band
competitions.
