" Empress Eugenie"
My ancestor was John Olley, (regimental no. 3338) who died in service at Hobart Town, 16th June 1862 [Coroners report, #5322, 17th June 1862). On 14th June he went to sleep in harness room of the house of his master, Major Edward Hungerford Eager [Anglesea Barracks] and there placed a certain portable stove containing a fire made with Port Arthur Coal and was there suffocated by the excess of carbonic acid . He languished until he died two days later.On 23 May 1860 he married Emmeline Bourne (age 21) in St Georgess C of E, Battery Point, Hobart, and Jeffery John Olley was born 19 Dec 1861.
Charles Olley , his older brother (Reg. # 2902). He was part of the detachment that was sent to New Zealand(1.10.1860 at least 31.3.1861
