    James Murtagh was a pensioner guard for 20 years in 12th Regiment of Foot. He served at
    Gibraltar and Mauritius. James Murtagh was a Private (No.382) Born circa 1806 in Skreen, Sligo, Ireland. Arrived in Tasmania on the "Eliza" in 1850.He settled with his family in Tasmania, died 20 Aug. 1897 at Campbell Town,Tas, and is buried there.
    Spouse was Hannah Callaghan.
    James Murtagh of the 12th Regiment of Foot, Suffolk Regiment, arrived on the Eliza with his wife Hannah Callaghan and 6 children.  James enlisted in the Regiment on December 7, 1824 at the age of 18.  Aside from serving in England he served 17 years abroad including over 9 years in Gibraltar and over seven years in Mauritius (the Regiment served in Mauritius from 1837-1848).  James was discharged as unfit for further duty at the Parkhurst Barracks, Chatham on July 15, 1845 after being with the Regiment for 20 years and 211 days.  He was 39 years old at the time.  Upon arrival in Tasmania he resided in Brighton and worked as a road labourer.  James enlisted into a detachment of Enrolled Pensioners that volunteered for service in Victoria in 1852.
