History & Achievements :

Major General Philip McPherson was posted in Sydney with the 17th Regiment. He fought in the Peninsular War, and later in the Crimea. I don't know what rank he held whilst in Australia, but he didn't become a General until the Crimean War. While in Sydney he and his wife Caroline had three children that I know of - Francis 1831, Cecil 1833 and Fitzroy in 1835. I think his wife Caroline died here or soon after, as he married again, but I haven't been able to find her death. According to Hart's Army List he had a long string of decorations, but I assume they were gained elsewhere. I would love to look at the records in the Mitchell Library, but I am laid up with a broken leg, and in any case am here in Melbourne. I suppose there are no copies of the records held anywhere else? I think this an interesting project and wish you well with it!
