    History & Achievements :
William Lane was born in Goodrich Hereford in 1796.  He joined the British army in  23 December 1812  39th Regiment of foot and after a career in France and Ireland arrived as a guard on the "ENGLAND" on 18th September, 1826.  He was accompanied by his wife Sarah (Boyde) and 3 children William, James and Elizabeth. He was stationed in Illawarra and then transferred to the Mounted Police.  He transferred to the 4th Regiment on 1 July 1832 and then to the 80th Foot in July 1837.  On 1 Sept 1840 he transferred to the Mounted Police.   Clearly he liked it in Australia.  He retired as a Sergeant and even got a write up in the Sydney Papers for capturing a dangerous bushranger.  He died in Windsor, N.S.W. in 1863.
