McAlister arrived
in Australia as part of the North Hamptonshire Regiment (48th
- Regiment of Foot) contingent, on board one
of three ships the ship "Dick"
"Matilda "or"
Lloyd's " 3/11/1817 .
He began his military career as an appointed Ensign on
9th of November 1815 and was promoted to Lieutenant on
the 26th of July 1821.
- It has been recorded that
on the 24th of March 1818 ,Ensign Lachlan McAlister
sailed from Sydney as part
- of a contingment to relieve
a company of the 46th Regiment at Port Dalrymple,
Tasmania. This was on board the Government ship "
Elizabeth Henrietta " ,this
group of the 48th were under the command of Major Gilbert
Cimitier.
- Following a dispute with
the command of the time, McAlister became unpopular with
the 48th's
- commanders and was
transferred to Georgetown, then to Newcastle. McAlister
became the first officer of the 48th Regiment to leave
the service and settle in New South Wales. He took 2,000
acres at Myrtle Creek now called Myrtleville . He named
his property " Strathaird "and by 1837 it had
reached 16,300 acres (the property is located near Argyle
which extended from Taralga to Lake George.) McAlister
became very well known in the district as a Magistrate
and in 1833 became the commandant of the Bathurst Mounted
Police.
- McAlister was in charge of
the party responsible for the death of the Bushranger
"Wild Jack" Donohue at Bringelly.
- McAlister wished to extend
his land holdings and led a party into the Gippsland
region in 1837. He
- held land at Geelong and
Mitchelltown. In Victoria the McAlister River is named in
his honour,
- also a mountain at Taralga
bears his name "Mount McAlister"
- McAlister died in 1855. at
"Clifton " his property at Campbelltown,New
South Wales.
