    History & Achievements :

While carrying out some research in the old Shortland Cemetery (closed) I came across a neglected, single plot grave with a small headstone - Henry Kelly, 18th Royal Irish, aged 76, RIP - that's all, not date of death etc.   I then checked our old newspapers and found that Henry died at the Thames hospital on 9 May, 1916. A brief obituary reported that he was formerly of the 18th Royal Irish and served through the Maori Wars. He was the recipient of the Imperial pension and the New Zealand  military pension. He was well known in the town and district and made many friends during his residence here.  The funeral took place on 11 May - the cortege leaving the hospital at 2.30pm for Shortland Cemetery.
