  •  Mathew Keefe Pte 11th 20yrs 2mo, 5'11 1/2".fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; deserted 19 Oct 1846, Sydney; enlisted 7 Aug 1843 Kilkenny ; bapt .Tipperary ; labourer. Wore shell jacket and white trousers.
    Matthew Keefe  deserted the 11th Regiment. Matthew
    He rejoined the regiment and was discharged in 1850. He then joined the Sydney Water Police in November of that year. From 1852 until 1863, he and family lived in Kyneton in Victoria. For some of that time he was with the police. In 1863 he went to New Zealand to fight in the New Zealand Wars and never returned to Australia.
  • Mathew's family all went to N.Z. in 1864, the year after him. One daughter, Alice, later returned, married a Mr Bowker and lived in Victoria and N.S.W.
