    History & Achievements :

Mr John Whelan arrived here in Tasmania as a Military Pensioner and was granted land at Oatlands where he settled.  A son Walter born 1853 married Amelia Hayden daughter of Edward Hayden and Ellen Dobbin.  Edward Hayden also arrived as a Military Pensioner aboard the Eliza and is noted as being of the 10th Foot Regiment.  He and his family also were allotted land at Oatlands

.John Whelan arrived a a Military Pensioner in Hobart aboard the Convict Ship Eliza.    He was stated as being 50th Regiment, Pte John Whelan.  The 50th Regiment were the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment.  John died somewhere between 1853 and before 1855

Have records of an Ellen Whelan arriving Steerage aboard a Female convict ship the 'Martin Luther?' on the 1st Sept 1852.  The ship was from Dublin.  This may be  Ellen Whelan following her Husband who came separately as a Military Pensioner and guard of a convict Ship called Eliza.  He arrived in December 1849.  A son Walter was born one year after her arrival.
