History
& Achievements :

- James Groom Abt. b. 1789, Dovercourt, Essex, England, he
enlisted in the West Essex Militia at abt. 21 yrs of age, around 25
- yrs of age he joined the 2nd Btn. East Kent Regiment and was sent
to Canada, they were recalled to England in 1815 and stationed at
- Hastings Barracks. After Napoleon's escape from Elba they were
sent to France where he met his wife Albertine Dupont, In Nov 1818 hi
- regiment was sent to Ireland, Albertine went too, in Ireland
hetransferred to the 3rd Regiment East kent and was sent to N.S.W with
Albertine accompanying him
- In NSW in 1824 James was stationed at Port Macquarie.
- 1825 he was moved to Newcastle.
- 1827 he was transferred to 7 Co. 57th Regiment (West
Middlesex).
- 1828 sent to Moreton Bay (now in Queensland).
- 1830 sent to Parramatta.
- 1831 transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment and sent back
to Moreton Bay.
- 1832 he was in Sydney on Garrison guard duty.
- 31 May 1833 he was discharged possibly on grounds of ill
health, as he died in 1839 aged 50. James was a Private with many
years of army service, his discharge pay for 18 months at 8d per day
was 18 pounds 4 shillings and 8 pence, equivalent to $36.47
