  Men listed as deserting from the Regiment

  These men have been recorded as deserters from the Regiment in which they served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men eventually settled. We have included them as they recieved a description etc,and it may be of help to their descendants. Today ,we understand why these men deserted, in some cases they were treated worse than the convicts were.

• JOHNSON, James Pte 2526 65th 19yrs 3mo, 5'5 3/8", dark brown hair, brown eyes; deserted 21 Oct 1846, Sydney; enlisted 10 Jan 1846, Westminster; born Tiverton, Devon; servant. Had a pass to go on shore from the freight ship Java; reported as a deserter from HM Forces serving in New Zealand. This man was in NSW before he enlisted and is supposed 'to have friends at Liverpool. His regimental uniform was found, he having changed his clothes.

• JOHNSON, William Pte 1538 65th 28yrs, 5'6", fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; deserted 10 Feb l84O; enlisted Clara Castle; bapt. Tomacork, Wicklow; marks D; labourer. Regimental jacket, white duck trousers. Second desertion.
