listed as deserting from the Regiment
These men have been
recorded as deserters from the Regiment in which they
served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men
eventually settled. We have included them as they
recieved a description etc,and it may be of help to their
descendants. Today ,we understand why these men deserted,
in some cases they were treated worse than the convicts
were.
- JACKSON, Oliver Pte 3242 40th
19yrs, 5'5", sallow complexion, light brown hair,
hazel eyes; enlisted 13.8.1854, Taunton; labourer; born
Taunton, Somerset; deserted at Ballarat on 26.8.1856.
Remarks - small pox scars. Note - apprehended 22.11.1856.
- JEFFERY, William Pte 3603 40th
20.1yrs, 5'5", fresh complexion, dark brown hair,
hazel eyes; enlisted 28.11.1854 Taunton, labourer; born
Buckland St. Mary Somerset; deserted at Melbourne on
27.1.1857.
- JENKINS, Nehemiah Pte 40th 25yrs,
5'6"; fresh complexion, light brown hair, hazel
eyes; Englishman; deserted at Adelaide on 14.11.1859.
Note - still at large Aug.1861.
- JOHNSON, William 40th 19.5yrs,
5'6"; fresh complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes;
enlisted 1.12.1859, Melbourne; painter; born Oldford
Middlesex; deserted at Melbourne on 7.12.1859.

5'7", sallow complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes;
labourer, born Buckingham; deserted April / May 1854.
- JUBB, William Pte 2422 40th 32yrs,
5'11"; fair complexion, light hair, grey eyes;
enlisted 21.10.1844, East Retford Nottingham; labourer;
born East Retford Nottingham; deserted at Melbourne on
5.6.1859.
