    Information by  
    Martin Hughes served twelve years in the Ionian Islands, before coming to Australia. His regiment number was Reg. No 236.
     
    "The Australian", had this notice on September 4th, 1838:-
    "Hughes, Martin, appointed Constable at Parramatta by Governor from 6th ins. 
    Dated 22/8/1838."
     
    The 1841 Census shows that Martin Hughes had a residence on the Western Road, Parramatta.  He lived there with his wife and two daughters.  They were still there in 1859 and 1862.  Martin's occupation was shown as a carrier.  From 1869 on, Martin appeared on Electoral Rolls at various places in the Wellington area - Mudgee Creek, 1870, and Nullen Creek, 1874 - 1876.  In 1881 he was at Moorooronan.
     
    After Martin’s death on 19 May 1882 he was buried at St Patrick Cemetery, Parramatta, however, there is no headstone
