- History &
Achievements :
- Charles Jewel Hearle born c 1831 at Milborne
Port, Somerset, married 29 May 1851 at Cork to Emma
Johnson, daughter of the bandmaster of the 40th Regiment.
For some reason Charles did not go with the 40th Regiment
to Melbourne in 1852. He spent time at Kent as a military
schoolmaster (daughter born at Hougham 26 Aug 1854) but
them came to Melbourne on the Blackwell in 1855. Children
born after that were often born in barracks and he
described himself as a military schoolmaster on their
certificates. I don't know when he left, but from 1862 he
was working at Melbourne Grammar School. He died in 1875
at Cheltenham, Victoria.
