Catherine was the daughter of Captain B. G. Hamilton who was responsible for the drawings of many of the Second Penal Settlement buildings on the Island. Several of the original plans bearing his signature remain in the Tasmanian Archives and copies may be seen on Norfolk Island. There are number of references to Lieutenant Hamilton in a dispatch from Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales, to Lord Stanley, at pages 727/8 of the Historical Records of Australia, Volume 23.
