• Men listed as deserting from the Regiment

  These men have been recorded as deserters from the Regiment in which they served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men eventually settled. We have included them as they recieved a description etc,and it may be of help to their descendants. Today ,we understand why these men deserted, in some cases they were treated worse than the convicts were.

• HARDIMAN, Mathew Pte 12th 30yrs, 5'5", dark complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; enlisted 28.2.1859, Sydney NSW; labourer; born Galway; deserted at Sydney on 9.5.1859. Note - discharged from 58th on 31.10.1858.

• HILL, Joseph Pte 58th 20yrs, 5'8 1/2", fresh complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes; deserted 9 Mar 1846, Auckland. Enlisted 15 Nov 1842, Hemmingford ,Grey; bapt . Colne , Huntingdon ; labourer.
