History
& Achievements :
- John Gowen enlisted in the Royal Marines as a
member of the 47th Portsmouth Company
- . William was stationed on board the ship "
Sirius" It was on this ship that he arrived in
Australia .On the 2nd of October on board the
"Golden Grove "he was sent to assist in the
settlement of Norfolk Island . Ending his duty he
returned to Sydney on board the ship "Supply" ,
only to return and try to settle on board the
"Atlantic " John had a grant of 60 acres at
Cascade Stream Phillipsburg. This failed and he returned
to Port Jackson a year later to en-list in the Royal New
South Wales Corps. .
- In 1800 he discharged and was appointed as store
keeper. Received a grant of 200 acres at Liberty Plains
and a grant of 208 acres at Parramatta. John Gowen was
one of the signatures on a petition to have Governor
Bligh arrested and removed from office.
