Obituary
Charles Goodman
“Sydney Morning Herald”
30 December 1907
“Mr. Charles Goodman Snr. For many years a resident of Glebe passed away at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital early yesterday morning.
Deceased was 83 years of age, and was born in Rickmansworth, County Herts. And came out to the Colonies with the 65th Regiment (Royal Bengal Tigers), seeing service in New Zealand in the war with the Maoris.  Subsequently, he came to this state and was one of the pioneers of stone-milling in the Hartley and Bathurst districts long before the railway was opened.
Deceased had been a resident of Glebe for 46 years, and saw it grow from small to very large proportions.
He leaves a widow, 4 sons, 2 daughters, and 35 grandchildren.”

According to pay muster, Charles Goodman embarked from England for Van Dieman’s Land either 25 March 1845 or 1846 it must have been difficult to read which date on the microfilm. (Reel 3842).  Private George Goodman (maybe no connection) embarked for Van Dieman’s Land definitely 1845.  From Sydney then to the Bay of Islands NZ. Private Charles Goodman displayed Good Conduct 1848 (Reel 3843).  By 1849 Charles was ‘sick’ (Reel  3844).  He was then on duty in a place Pahant….. Ponds?  By 1852 was in Porerua and listed as ‘sick’ again.  Received a FREE Discharge (not sure what that means) in Wellington end of 1852 (Ithink)(Reel 1845).  Private George Goodman discharged at Wanganui 31 Mar receiving six months pay.
