- Stephen Gilbert enlisted in the Royal Marines as
a member of the 36th Plymouth Company
- Following his arrival he was attached to Captain
John Shea's Company. After arriving on Norfolk Island he
recieved a grant of 60 acres at Ball's Bay Buckingham.
Left Norfolk Island on Board the ship "Kitty "
in March of 1793 . He eventually discharged from the
Marines and enlisted in the Royal New South Wales
Regiment. Recieved a grant of land at Bankstown of 100
acres and a grant of 150 acres at Mulgrave Park.
Served in Sydney and Norfolk Island. According to Mollie Gillen's book and
others, Stephen had a land grant at Ball's Ball, Norfolk Island (while a
free settler between Marines and Corps), although records do not show this,
so it may have been in partnership. Stephen land in partnership with 3
other ex-Marines in Mulgrave Place (Hawkesbury) and also in partnership with
MURPHY, Michael,
at Bankstown. Died in 1799 - no detail found. The combined 200 acres
owned by Stephen Gilbert and MURPHY, Michael,
at Bankstown was sold after Stephen's untimely death to Matthew Flinders
