Private Alexander
Fullerton began his military career as a member of the 91st
Highland Regiment . Alexander
would have discharged in England and enlisted in the Royal New South Wales
Veterans Company Regiment (; service in Australia ; 1810 -
1823 & 1826 - 1833) arriving
in Australia as part of the Number 3 Company Royal Veterans of
Tasmania 1826 - 1833 .
These men arrived in Van Diemans Land ,26/8/1826 ,via the ship
" John Barry"
Following his discharge Alexander applied for and recieved a
grant of land in the township of Launceston. This grant was at 5
Veteran's Row . Alexander was a widower when he married Eleanor
Hunt ,who was the widow of a fellow soldier William Hunt .
Following Alexander's death,Eleanor married another veteran, John
Thompson.
Alexander
Fullerton's obituary was recorded in the Colonial Times
of July the 20th 1841. It describes
- Alexander as a
Veteran of Campelton Argyleshire . He served with the 91st
Highlanders at the Cape of Good Hope, with sir John Moore
and the Duke of Wellington in the Peninuslar War, and at
the Battle of Waterloo. He joined the Royal Navy, then
the Veteran Corps. He died at the Sir Thomas Brisbane
Hotel Hobart,aged 58 years.
