- Joseph's records show that he was
a Private (No. 45), in the 63rd Regiment of
Foot who served in the West Indies from 8th May 1815
until 2nd July 1819. On 25th of December 1820 he was
promoted to Corporal , but for reasons unknown that
promotion only lasted until the 9th of July 1821. Between
this time and his sailing with the 63rd Regiment on
a convict ship for New South Wales in late 1828,
he married Roseanna (surname not known) from Ireland. It
seems the marriage was in England. It's
un-established at this stage where Joseph served his
initial time in Australia, but it seems that his wife may
have been the Mrs. Ford who arrived on the ship 'Norval'
in 1832 at Launceston? Joseph
is shown on the Regiment's pay lists around this time either
on duty at Port Arthur, or listed in Government
Employ or on Garrison Duty.
Joseph
transferred to the 21st Foot as a Private (No. 979) on
1st Nov 1833; presumably because the 63rd regiment
was going abroad. Joseph can be found on the pay lists of
the 21st Regiment still on duty at Port Arthur. On
1st April 1838 Joseph transferred to the Regiment of the
51st Foot, (No.1240). He'd been in ill health it
appears, and he applied for a Pension. He's
listed on the regiments pay sheets as a Chelsea Pensioner
and is at this time found on detachment at Port Arthur or
attending the Government Magazine. Joseph
was awarded his pension on the 8th of July 1840. His
records state that ''since his transfer to the
51st Regiment he had been quite unable to perform his
duty and had spent a considerable time in hospital.'' Joseph
and Roseanna remained in Hobart where Joseph died on 11th
July 1871.
