- Joseph was a Armour Sergeant with the 40th,sailed
on the 16th of may 1840 for India, and landed on the 4th
of Sept 1840 at Karachie he fought in the first Afghan
war at Kandahar Ghanzie, and Karbal. In 1843 he married
Maryanne Carberry in Meerut India, Maryanne's father was
Sergeant John Carberry who is listed on your pages on the
40th first tour in australia, it was on this tour that
Maryanne was born in Sydney. In 1843 Joseph fought in the
battle of Maharajpore, looking at the muster books at the
PRO in Kew on the 3rd of December 1854 he is listed with
Capt Wise at Eureka Stockade. In 1859 Maryanne gave birth
to a second son Fredrick Darran in Melbourne, and in 1860
Joseph sailed on HMS VICTORIA for the land wars in New
Zealand. Joseph was at the battle of Puketakauere, left
the service in 1862 and went back to England to Chatham.
He died in 1899 in Milton Kent.
