    History & Achievements

He was originally stationed at Wellington, but according to his son, he was transferred to Tauranga, when the threat of Maori conflict became apparent. (This may have been in the 1860'
John Darby married Eliza Smith in Auckland in 1850 and their 1st son was born in New Zealand. It appears that he and his family returned to NSW (possibly early 1853) and he remained there  until probably early/mid 1863, when they returned to New Zealand
He was discharged from the British Army on April 28th 1863, after 21 years service.  His rank was Quartermaster Sergeant.
On 30.6.1863, he re-enlisted as a volunteer, with the 1st WAIKATO Regiment in New Zealand and I believe was involved in the skirmish at Gate Pa.
Two of his daughters married men in the Military Constabulary.
John and his family returned to New Zealand and settled in Tauranga, where they remained for the rest of their lives. (John died there on  2.2.1890
