    24 Brevit Major James Henry CRUMMER Sailed as Capt. P/matta - Newcastle - To Brevitt Major 10/1/37 - Police Magistrate at Newcastle until 1/3/39 To Major unattached 1/3/39

    Gazetted Ensign 28th Rgt 31.07.1805     Lt 02.07.1807    Capt 20.07.1815     Entered Royal Military College at Sandhurst in 1818 and passed out 1821.    He served in Portugal, Spain  and France taking part in 17 battles.   He was wounded in the left leg in Albuzara in 1811 and further wounded in the same leg in 1813 leaving him permanently lame. He took part in the forming of the Squares at Quatre Bas and Waterloo.    In the Greek War of Independence 1821-28 he was Commandant at Calamos in the Ionian Islands.   He married Katrina Georgia Plessos (1809-1907) niece of friend of Lord Byron.   In 1832 the old wounds in his leg broke out again afresh.   He applied for a pension but was refused on the grounds of the lapse of time since the wounds were received.   He decided to settle in Australia with his family.   He was police Magistrate of Newcastle and Maitland in 1849      He transferred to Port Macquarie in 1858 where he died in 1867.   At his own request he was given a Military Funeral.     He had 11 children.    His youngest son, Henry Samuel Walker Crummer, a Surveyor, became an authority on early NSW pastoral holdings and the first librarian of the Sydney Philharmonic Soc.
