- History &
Achievements :
- Thomas Crowhurst listed as a foot policeman in the 96th
regiment.
- He was born in 1819 in
England, the 5th
of 10 children, and came out to
Australia as a private.
- His parents were John Crowhurst and Ruth Rabbitt.
- He was baptized 29 Aug 1819 in
Lamberhurst,
Kent,
England.
- He came to
Australia as a private
in the army.
- I believe he first served at Port gaula (whereever that is) and then
Port Arthur, in
Tasmania.
- He married Euphemia Ross (b around 1811) on 17 Oct 1842, in
Hobart
- He arrived in
South Australia from
Tasmania in 1846
- He settled in Terowie (North of Adelaide),
South Australia, and is in
Terowie on the 1887 census
- He married Jane Thorburne, leaving his previous property to Euphemia
Ross, and with Jane, fathered 10 children.
- He is
recorded as having been awarded land by credit selection: CROWHURST Thomas;
Kimberley; Hd Gumbowie; Sect 14;
total area 475 acres; £486/17/6; 22-5-1877
- A number of his children also settled in the area around Terowie and 2
were awarded land also by credit selection.
- This was a wheat farming area, so I think he became a wheat farmer. My
grandfather started out as a wheat farmer in Terowie also.
- He died in Terowie on 16 Feb 1890 and is buried in the Terowie cemetery
(plot 418 with a wrought iron fence).
- Also, there is a picture of him and his wife, Jane, in the South
Australian library.
