- History &
Achievements :
- Henry dropped his surname when
joining the army, replacing it with his middle name from
then on. Prior to his arrival in Australia he
saw service in Ireland, rising rapidly to Corporal (April
1842) and Sergeant (October 1842). Perhaps because
he was literate. He and the expectant Matilda
and their eldest child left England to accompany 506 male
convicts on the HMS Anson, which was later moored on the
Derwent River at Risdon and converted into a hulk for
female prisoners.
After disembarking in Hobart, Henry, Matilda and Bill
transferred to Windsor NSW, and onto Brisbane, where
Henry saw service at Moreton Bay. It was here that
he was demoted to Private for a military misdemeanour
(1844) and also for a time was seconded/attached to the
99th regiment (1846). He spent some time at
Parramatta, and also at Port Philip, (Melbourne) finally
transferring to New Zealand, with Lt Col Wynyard, on the
"Thomas Lowry" in 1847. It was in
Auckland that he took his discharge two years later.
He was entitled to the New Zealand War medal,
1845-47.
After his discharge from the 58th Regiment, he became a
shoe-maker and bootmaker, and served again with the
military.
