- William Cleaver , who took his
discharge from the 58th regt in Auckland New Zealand in
1857, where he had spent the last few years on garrison
duty. He had received promotion under Captain
Nugent to Corporal in 1848 and to Colour Sergeant in
1853. After his discharge he lived at Mahurangi
where he was involved in the kauri timber industry. Later
he worked in packing provisions to the bushworkers and
gumdiggers at various places along coastal North Island
of New Zealand, including Mahurangi, Tairua, and
Whitianga. William Cleaver married Charlotte
McDowell in 1850 and had a family of 10. He died at
Whitianga, New Zealand 8 Oct 1900.
