History
& Achievements :
- Private Charles Fraser arrived in Australia on
board the convict transport "Guilford" on 8/4/1816.
Charles began his military career on the 8/6/1815, joining 56th Regiment
age the age of 24. Transferring to the 46th Regiment on
the 7/11/1816 and eventually to the 48th Regiment on the
25/8/1817, Charles would not have seen any military
action due to the late stage he enlisted. He was enlisted
as a substitute for one George Hartley. This would have
made it a lot easier to discharge from the army on the
grounds of a British Army standard called the "Friend
of a Substitute". He discharged on the 6/1/1821 on
these grounds per Governor Macquarie and was formally
appointed Colonial Botanist
- Prior to his enlistment,
Charles was a Gardener. This was to prove invaluable to
him and the Government.
- Eventually he became a
Government Botanist and had been with John Oxley on his
first inland expedition. Charles had been on many inland
expeditions and was instrumental in setting up the
Botanical Gardens in Sydney.
