Men
listed as deserting from the Regiment
These men have been
recorded as deserters from the Regiment in which they
served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men
eventually settled. We have included them as they
recieved a description etc,and it may be of help to their
descendants. Today ,we understand why these men deserted,
in some cases they were treated worse than the convicts
were.
CASEY, Patrick Pte
58th 23yrs, 5'9", fresh complexion, light brown
hair, grey eyes, deserted 9 Mar 1847, Melbourne; enlisted
12 Aug 1844, Cork; bapt. Newtown,Cork; labourer. Has a
full face, small nose, large mouth, thick neck, broad
shoulders, stout thighs and large feet. adore regimental
shell jacket and white linen trowsers.
CHAMBERLAIN,
William Pte 58th 25yrs 9mo, 5'8 1/2", fresh
complexion, light brown hair, dark eyes; deserted 10 Mar
1846,Auckland. Enlisted 10 June 1844,Coventry; bapt. St
Margaret's, Leicester; painter. Wore regimental red coat,
black trousers and took the whole of his regimental
necessaries.
CURSON, Charles
Pte 58th 21yrs 6mo, 5'8", sallow complexion, dark
brown hair, blue eyes; deserted 9 Mar 1846, Auckland.
Enlisted 23 Sept 1843, Wisbeach; bapt. Riston, Herts;
labourer Red shell jacket, white linen trousers.
Information
regarding some of the 58th soldiers
CAMPTON Samuel
private of the 58th regiment,
took his discharge, married and settled in Auckland New Zealand.
His wife was Martha ROSE who was a widow of James STACEY. James
STACEY was a Sgt. in the 58th who died while in service. (not of
