Achievements :
- George Brigden
enlisted in the 58th Rutlandshire Regiment of Foot on the
9th June 1842 and was stationed at Chatham, Kent until
10th April 1844, whereupon he embarked for Van Diemens
Land' as a guard on the convict ship 'Maria Somes'.
After delivering the convicts to Hobart Town in Tasmania,
the 'Maria Somes' proceeded to Sydney, disembarking on 17
August 1844.
George stayed in Sydney until 10 March 1845, when he left
for New Zealand on either the 'North Star' or the
'Velocity' (both sailed together), arriving in Auckland
on 24 March 1845 for the Maori Wars at the Bay of
Islands. He returned to Australia with the regiment on
board the 'Java', arriving into Sydney on 19
December 1846.
He married Mary Ann Greenwood (originally from Idle,
Yorkshire) in Sydney on 17 May 1847, before
returning to New Zealand, where he stayed until his
discharge on 30 September 1848.
Soon after his arrival back in Australia, George enlisted
in the New South Wales Police Force where he served from
1848 to 1854.
