John Batchelor (c.1740...1788)
- John Batchelor enlisted in the Royal Marines as
part of the 55th Portsmouth Company. He served as part
- of the convict guard on board the
ship "Sirius"
prior to its departure from England. Richard sailed with
the ship to Port Jackson and arrived as part of the First
Fleet. John was amongst the first group to be sent to
Norfolk Island on February 14th 1788 on board the ship
"Supply" . He was caught steeling rum and
received 36 lashes. On the 15th of June 1788 John
Batchelor was drowned when the fishing vessel he was in
was swamped. His body was recovered and was buried near
the Norfolk Flag Staff
