History
& Achievements :
- Marine Private John Barrisford enlisted in the
41st Portsmouth Company of the Royal Marines. John was
- stationed on board the ship " Prince of
Wales and it was upon this ship that he and his family
arrived in Australia . During August he was charged with
drunken abuse, and on the 15th of August 1787 he recieved
50 lashes for the offence. Following his arrival in Port
Jackson he was discharged from the "Prince of
Wales" and attached to the Port Jackson Garrison.
- In October of 1793 he and his family left Port
Jackson via the ship "Atlantic" for Norfolk
Island,where he
- recieved a grant of 60 acres at Phillipsburg .
John made a success of this grant and by 1807 his land
holding was 140 acres.
- On September the 3rd 1808 John , Hannah and two
children sailed on board the ship "City of Edinburgh
"
- to Tasmania . By 1809 John had land holdings of
121 acres at Glenorchy.
- On April the 19th 1823 the Hobart Gazette
reported the following incident " An attack on
Joseph Barrisford
- his Wife and Mother, when their bullock cart was
upset and Joseph's leg was broken. A man came out of the
bush, and "After beating the poor old woman in a
most inhuman manner robbed her of some dollars"
