Lancaster, regimental no. 920 (enlisted:
30/11/1832).must have left Australia as his daughter was born in India
in 1845; and according to the Museum he died during the Burmese War in
1852. At the time his daughter was born William was ranked as a
Men listed as deserting from the Regiment
These men have been
recorded as deserting from the Regiment in which they
served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men
eventually settled. We have included them as they
recieved a description etc. and it may be of help to
their descendants.Today we understand why these men
deserted, many were treated worse than the convicts were.
WilliamPte 80th 25yrs, 5'6", light brown hair, hazel
eyes; rather large head, stout and awkward make; small
nose, large mouth, short and thick neck, square
shoulders, stout thighs and legs, large flat feet. Four
prisoners escaped from HM Goal Melbourne, and a deserter
of the 80th Regt, the sentinel then on duty there; from 5
Mar last (1843); the prisoners were pursued to Portland.
BELL, JohnPte 80th
24yrs 9mo, 5'8 3/4", fresh complexion, light brown
hair, blur eyes; deserted 28 Aug 1843, Melbourne;
enlisted 28 Dec 1839, Stoke upon Trent; bapt. Stafford;
potter. Wore red shell jacket, black cloth trowsers.
1373 80th 21yrs 6mo, 5'9 l/2", light brown hair,
hazel eyes; enlisted 20 Oct 1836, Rochester ; born East
Bergholt Suffolk; comb maker. Deserted 24 Apr 1841 from
Parramatta. Supposed to be in the vicinity of Windsor or
Bathurst. Also deserted 12 Oct 1842 from Governor's
Guard, Sydney; marks of punishment. Took with him his
great coat, arms, accoutrements and ammunition.
80th 24yrs 7mo, 5'6 1/2", fresh complexion, light
brown hair, grey eyes; deserted 2 Feb
l843,Sydney,enlisted 10 Aug 1835,Chatham;marks of
corporal punishment and marked D under left arm;
