CHARLES BRIGDEN also enlisted in June 1842 but did not settle
in
Australia.
- I further note that his name is on
another page in your records and thought it was worthy of mention that
both brothers must have served in Australia but I have no further details
on Charles, except that he
- spent a lot of time in
Ireland (where his six
children were born) and listed his occupation as drummer in the 58th
Regiment at Nether Hallam,
Yorkshire,
England in
the 1861 English Census.
Men listed as deserting from the Regiment
These men have been
recorded as deserting from the Regiment in which they
served. There is more than a strong possibilty these men
eventually settled. We have included them as they
recieved a description etc. and it may be of help to
their descendants.Today we understand why these men
deserted, many were treated worse than the convicts were.
BARLOW, John Pte
58th 21yrs 9mo, 5'9", fresh complexion, fair hair,
grey eyes, pockpitted; deserted 11 May 1847,
Williamstown; born Hull, York; labourer. Wore red shell
jacket, regimental black trowsers.
BRESNAN, John Pte
58th 22yrs 8mo, 5'8", sallow complexion, dark brown
hair, hazel eyes; deserted 27 Apr 1847, Melbourne; born
St Mary's, Middlesex; tailor. Red shell jacket and great
coat, no waistcoat, regimental blue trowsers.
BRESNAN alias POWER, John 58th
now in NZ
30yrs, 5'9", sallow complexion, brown hair, brown
eyes; deserted on 30.6.1856. Note - surrendered Kilmore
26.11.1856.
