Marine Private John Assell

John Assell enlisted in the Royal marines as part of the 41st Portsmouth Company 1st Royal Marines.

He served as part of the convict guard on board the ship "H.M.S. Sirius." prior to its departure from England. Richard sailed with the ship to Port Jackson and arrived as part of the First Fleet. John remained in Sydney and worked as a Gardener on garden Island. Garden Island began 10 days after the Fleet arrived in 1788 when CAPT Phillip gave it to the crew of the SIRIUS to grow their vegetables. He disappears from records after 1791
