ALEXANDER HENDERSON did NOT remain in Australia. He went to New
Zealand with the regiment and took his discharge there. He remained there
for the rest of his life.
Alexander was aboard the SLAINS CASTLE to Auckland in April 1845 where
they fought in the Maori Wars. Then the JAVA from New Zealand to Sydney
on 5 Dec 1846; he was aboard the THOMAS LOWRY from Sydney to New Zealand
on 14 Jun 1847 where he took his discharge in 1848. He received the New
Zealand War Medal.
Alexander joined the Armed Police Forces in Auckland after his
discharge and moved to Howick in 1855. He also worked as a shoemaker from
about 1852. 17 Nov 1857 he received a Crown Grant of land in Howick,
Auckland.
They moved to Mangonui circa 1858 after conveying the Crown Grant lands
and he seems to have given up policing in favour of shoe and boot making.
According to Electoral Rolls he lived in Crispin Cottage, Mangonui from
1865.
7 June 1841 Census of Scotland, Alexander was billeted with the 58th
Regiment, under Lt. Col. J.W. Frith at Edinburgh Castle in Canongate,
Edinburgh, Scotland
