  • History & Achievements :

As given in the shipping records, Joseph had been a 'Potter' before enlisting in the Artillery. Longton was a town engaged in china and earthenware manufacture, and he gives his Father's occupation as 'Potter' on his Marriage Certificate. His parents were still listed as living in Longton on the 1861 Census of England and his Father was also listed as a Potter still living in Longton.
Joseph's occupation as listed on the birth certificates of children born after he was discharged, were given as 'Labourer' and 'Miller'. From 5 October 1876 to 1893 Joseph was employed as a Explosives Magazine Warder, Goat Island. In the Govt. of Aust Blue Books in 1876 he is listed as the first Warder of 10. By 1893 there were only 2 Warders. The magazine was closed down by 1894 but Joseph was still employed on Goat Island as a labourer at the age of 64 years. It is not known when he retired but the family were living in Balmain and that is where Joseph died.
