This Regiment began its military
term in 1717 but was known only by the names of the
Colonels who commanded it. It was not until 1751 that the
40th Regiment became known as a Regiment of the line. In
1782 the Regiments name changed to the 40th (2nd
Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot, this title remained
until 1881.

Regiment of Foot
1881.....Amalgamated with the 82nd Regiment
and became The South Lancashire (Prince of Wales
Volunteers)
- 40th Regiment of Foot- 2nd Somersetshire headed
by Captain Matthew Price. They arrived in NSW on 5th
- November 1852 on board the HMS VULCAN.
