Note from Mary Beth.(edited here for clarity)

"Hi Carol , <>   I was searching for more info on the Washington Brewery in Washington, PA which is how I found your Claffey Home Page webpage. I saw that your great grandfather William Claffey Sr was an engineer at the flour mill and at the brewery.  I am Mary Beth (Fritz) ZELT and I live in Saint Marys, PA.  I have been working on my husband's ZELT family tree. ..............
There is a good possibility that  your great grandparents knew my husband's great great grandfather Jacob ZELT, a brewer from Laumershiem, Germany, who founded the brewery in 1845 or at least knew of him.  Jacob's sons were  brewers who ran the brewery and bought the flour mill and ran that as well after jacob died.

William Jacob ZELT,  son of Jacob ZELT served in the civil war in "Griffith's Independent Company, Pennsylvania Infantry 1863-1864".

About 1868, Jacob bought property in Saint Marys, PA and either there was a hotel on the property or he built one there.   it is also possible that your great grandfather knew Jacob's sons and daughters including my husband's great grandfather William Jacob ZELT who came  to Saint Marys to run the hotel and bar.  it was called the Farmer's Hotel.  Ater Jacob's  death William Jacob bought the hotel and property.   William Jacob Zelt  married and had 4 sons,  Joseph, born in Saint Marys, but who lived and died in Washington, PA, Otto, Jacob and George who took over the hotel after William Jacob passed away in 1899.

The hotel was rebuilt in 1901 and the three brothers ran the hotel and bar.  They had a dance hall there and also held concerts as well.  They also had a livery stable which became a tire   vulcanizing business later on.  The "new" hotel still stands after 106 years.

Saint marys is about 150 or so miles from Washington, PA.
