"M. Saugrain" (circa1867)

Handwritten on the back of this photograph taken in about 1867, is the name "M. Saugrain." Descendant Teresa Tillman, who has contributed the photo, is uncertain if "M" stands for Mademoiselle, or Mary.

Mary Ann Saugrain was born on 08 Jan 1846 in St. Louis, and her younger sister Eugenia Therese, was born 27 Oct 1848. Both young women are the granddaughters of Dr. Antoine Saugrain, daughters of his son Alphonse "Alfred" Saugrain and his wife Mary Josephine Dulcena (Linton). The older daughter, Mary Ann, was married to James C. Bury on 08 Feb 1870 and died in St. Louis on 21 May 1906. Eugenia was the wife of Charles Louis Tillman, whose father was the St. Louis merchant and founder of the Memphis & St. Louis Packet Company (later Anchor Steamboat Line). They were married on 08 Dec 1873, and Eugenia passed away on 29 Jan 1912.
