Residence of Charles Gratiot (1796)
Photo taken from "The Pioneer History of Illinois" by John Reynolds, Chicago, 1887

At the close of 1796, Mr. Gratiot purchased from his brother-in-law, Joseph M. Papin, a large stone house which was situated on Main and Second Street, just across the street (now Chesnut) from his mother-in-law, Mrs. Chouteau. At the time of its purchase it was described as having seven rooms not counting the basements, as well as a stone kitchen building with a court and a garden.

Gratiot moved into this house in early 1797 and shortly thereafter added a store onto the property. It is here that his six youngest children were born. He died of a stroke on 20 Apr 1817, leaving his widow and their eight children a wealth of real estate. She died 15 Jun 1825 and both were laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
