Robinson Family Marker
ROBINSON FAMILY

The son of Dr. John H. Robinson of Augusta Co., VA and Sophia (Michau) of Paris, France, Antoine "Anthony" Saugrain Robinson was born at Fort Osage, Missouri on 10 Apr 1810. He was first married to Marie Sarah Eulalie Provenchère on 04 Dec 1838. The daughter of Antoine Nicholas Pierre Provenchère and Mary Jeronima (Rutgers), she was born 09 Jun 1810 and baptized at the Old Cathedral on the 30th of July. According to the Old Cathedral records, she died on 23 Aug 1840 only five months and nine days after the birth of their daughter Mary Frances, who was born 14 Mar 1840 and died at about age twenty-six in 1866.

According to the Old Cathedral records, Anthony married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth May Alton, on 22 Oct 1851. They would become the parents of eleven children, several dying in their infancy. Anthony died at about age eighty-six in 1896 and Elizabeth in 1900, her burial taking place on the 20th of April.

Three children of Anthony and Elizabeth are listed on the front of the family marker: Sophie Eugenia Robinson who, according to her death certificate, was born in St. Louis on 23 Oct 1853 and died single in that city on 26 Apr 1919.

Joseph Matthew Robinson, the son of Anthony and Elizabeth (Alton), was born in St. Louis on 09 Mar 1859 and died 21 Jul 1941 at the age of 82 years, four months and twelve days. According to his death certificate, he was single and resided at 6170 Pershing Ave., and was manager at Merchants Laclede Building at the time of his death.

Besides the children listed on the front and back of the Robinson family marker, Anthony and Elizabeth (Alton) were also the parents of daughter May Monica who was born 03 May 1865 and died 31 Mar 1954; and daughter Louisa A. Robinson, who was born in August of 1867 and was listed as a stenographer in the 1900 census. The census having been taken shortly after the death of their mother, the household included Joseph M., a teller and his sisters Sophia, May, and Louisa, as well as his brother John Hamilton who was born in November 1870 and died in 1908.

Note: The 1886 date of birth for Ruth (Carroll) differs from the date 1889 listed on her death certificate.

The first name appearing on the back of the Robinson family marker is Marie Sarah Eulalie (Provenchère), who as noted above, was the first wife of Anthony S. Robinson and mother of Mary Frances. She was born in St. Louis on 09 Jun 1810 and was the daughter of Antoine Nicholas Pierre Provenchère and his wife Mary Jeronima (Rutgers). Her brother Ferdinand Provenchère was married to Mary Josephine Dulcena Linton, widow of Alphonse "Alfred" Saugrain who was the son of Dr. Antoine Saugrain and died at the age of forty-six in 1849.

Immediately following is Sophie Marie (Michau), who was born in Paris, France on 22 Feb 1786. The daughter of John Michau and Jeanne Genevieve Rosalie (Chevallier), she married Dr. John H. Robinson who had come to St. Louis shortly after the transfer of Louisiana to the United States, and who had been attached to Captain Pike's celebrated party that went to Santa Fe and Chihuahua. She died in St. Louis in 1848, and was the mother of: Antoine S. who was married to Marie Sarah Eulalie Provenchère and was for some time with the old Bank of Missouri; Edward V., who died in 1831 aboard the U.S. Sloop of war, Sylph, lost at sea in the Gulf of Mexico; and James H., Henrietta Sophia, and Virginia R. Robinson all who died at Natchez of Yellow Fever at or before the age of ten.

The five Robinson children listed on this headstone are the children of Anthony S. Robinson and his second wife, Elizabeth May (Alton). They were: Edward Hamilton who was born 28 Sep 1852, baptized on the 14th of October and died in 1853; Pauline Miriam who was born in February 1857 and died the same year; Ida Matilde who was baptized born 22 Jan 1858, baptized on the 30th and died the same year; Elizabeth Eleanor who was baptized on 20 Sep 1860 and died in 1861; and Clara Genevieve Robinson, who was born in 1862 and died in 1864.

Mary Frances Robinson, the only child of Anthony S. Robinson and Marie Sarah Eulalie (Provenchère) who were married 04 Dec 1838. As noted above, she was born in 1840 and died in 1866. Her name is cited in a court case in the March 1874 term regarding reference to Quit Claim Deeds and the judgment in the in cases regarding infants or minor children.

The next name, Anthony Saugrain Robinson, is son of Anthony S. Robinson and Elizabeth May (Alton). See headstone below.

Mary Eugenia Robinson, was daughter of Anthony S. Robinson (son of Anthony & Elizabeth), and his wife Eugenia Wells (Dorsey). She died in 1980.

The last name on the back of the Robinson headstone is that of Ruth Carroll (Robinson), who appears to be the daughter of Edward Hamilton Robinson and his wife Ruth (Carroll). Her married name at the time of her burial, October 5th, 1992, was Coffey.

Anthony "Saugrain" Robinson who was born 12 Feb 1855 in St. Louis and married Eugenia Wells (Dorsey) on 10 Dec 1884 in Bunker Hill, Macoupin Co., Illinois. They were the parents of Edward H. Robinson who was born 22 Dec 1885 and died 16 Jan 1936. Edward's wife was Ruth (Carroll), the daughter of Joseph C. Carroll and Ellenor (Sims), and she was born 29 Sep 1889* in Virginia and died in St. Louis on 10 Sep 1947. The family marker indicates they had an infant daughter who was born and died in 1916.

Eugenia Wells (Dorsey) was born 15 Sep 1858 in Illinois and was the daughter of Plutarch H. Dorsey of Jefferson Co., Kentucky and Olivia (Williamson) of Washington, D.C. Her family was enerumated in the census records residing in Macoupin Co., Illinois. Her siblings were: Plutarch H. "Harry," who married Margaret R. (Burton); Harriet Blair; Maria Louisa, who was later enumerated in Eugenia's 1920 household; Cora Cordelia, who died as a child in 1878; Oscar Lyle wh married Sadie Viola (Floyd); Ada Oliva who died in her infancy; and Wells Mayo Dorsey who maried Wilhelmina (Lester).

Eugenia married Anthony Saugrain Robinson on 10 Dec 1884 at Bunker Hill, Macoupin Co., Illinois. She died, according to her death record, in Clayton, St. Louis Co., Missouri on 13 Apr 1933 and her husband on the 21st of February 1945.
