WILLIAM CARTER
MAFFITT
1847 - 1914 |
| William was born
on 22 Aug 1847 and died on 11 May 1914. His
father, Dr. William Maffitt was the son of the
Rev. William and Nancy (Carter) Maffitt. He was
born at "Chantilly" Fairfax Co.,
Virginia on 14 Nov 1811 and received his
education at Columbia University (George
Washington University), District of Columbia,
graduating in 1831 with the degree of Doctor of
Medicine. The following year he was appointed
surgeon of the U.S. Army and served in this
capacity until his resignation in 1844. William's mother was Julia A. Chouteau, the daughter of
"Cadet" Chouteau and Emilie (Gratiot)
in New York City in 1842 and became the parents
of Emilie Maffit who was born and died 09 May
1844; Pierre Chouteau Maffitt who married Mary
Skinker; William Carter Maffitt; Ann Maffitt born
06 Oct 1848 and died same; Emilie Chouteau
Maffitt; Charles Chouteau Maffitt; Julia Marie
Maffitt, wife of Edward Walsh; and Ann
"Nancy" Maffitt, wife of Charles F.
Bates.
Dr. Maffitt and
his family made their home in St. Louis where he
was listed in the 1860 census as a very wealthy
man residing with his family at No. 91 Olive
Street. During his military career, he had
participated in the Seminole War in Florida, and
while there contracted malaria, which was the
immediate cause of his death. Dr. Maffitt died in
St. Louis on 07 Oct 1864 at the age of fifty-two
years, ten months, and twenty days. His wife's
death followed many years later in 1897.

CHARLES CHOUTEAU
MAFFITT
1852 - 1900 |
| The son of Dr. William
Maffitt and Julia A. (Chouteau), Charles
was born in St. Louis on 17 Feb 1852. He
was educated at Seton Hall College, of
South Orange, New Jersey, and at
Washington University, of St. Louis. He
was one of the chief representatives of
the iron mining and manufacturing
interests of Missouri, becoming
identified first with Chouteau, Harrison
& Valle Iron Company, and later with
the Iron Mountain Company of which he was
also president. He was also prominent in
the politics of Missouri. He died 23 Mar
1900 at the age of forty-eight years, one
month and six days. |

BENJAMIN CHOUTEAU
SANFORD
1835 - 1893 |
| The son of Emilie (Chouteau)
and John F.A. Sanford (of the Dred Scott
case), Benjamin was born in St. Louis on
16 May 1835. He was married to Louise
Berthold on 04 May 1858, she the daughter
of Pierre A. Berthold and Virginia E.
(Malcot). They were the parents of Pierre
Chouteau Sanford; Virginia Sanford, wife
of Albert Lawnin; Irene C. Sanford; and
Benjamin Chouteau Sanford who was born in
1880 and died in 1905. |

BENJAMIN CHOUTEAU
SANFORD
1880 - 1905 |
| Born in New York on 06 Oct
1880, Benjamin was the son of Benjamin
and Louisa (Berthold). According to his obituary, he died at
Bertholdmont, Doniphan Co., Missouri on
18 Jan 1905 in his twenty-fifth year. |

IRENE C. SANFORD
1878 - 1945 |
| The daughter of Benjamin
Chouteau Sanford and Louisa (Berthold),
Irene was born in New York on 11 May
1878. She was first married at the age of
twenty to Benjamin L. Behr; second
marriage to Baron Gustave Carl von
Schrader, third to Count Lischinsky and
lastly to Walker Guion. She died in St.
Louis on 25 Dec 1945 at the age of
sixty-seven years, seven months and
fourteen days.
