Charles Gratiot & Victoire (Chouteau)
CHARLES GRATIOT & WIFE, VICTOIRE (CHOUTEAU)
Born in Lausanne, Switzerland on 28 Jun 1754, Charles was a descendant of French Hugenots who had emigrated from France. After spending time in London, he later went to Montreal and in 1769 came to the Illinois country where he engaged in the fur trade. He was a successful and prominent businessman and made valuable contributions to the Revolutionary War, and when the U.S. took possession of Louisiana, it was from his home that the American flag was first flown.

He married Miss Victoire Chouteau, daughter of Marie Therese Bourgeois and Pierre Laclède on 25 Jun 1781. They were the parents of Julia, wife of Jean P. Cabanné; Victoire, who married Sylvestre Labbadie; Charles who married Ann Belin; Marie Therese who married Jean N. Maclot; Henry who married Susan Hempstead; Emilie who married Pierre "Cadet" Chouteau; Isabella, wife of Jules De Mun; Marie Brigitte who died at age seven; John P.B. who married Marie Perdreauville; and Paul Benjamin who married Virginia Billon.

Charles died in St. Louis on 20 Apr 1817 and his widow Victoire died on 15 Jun 1825.

 

 
Gen. Charles Gratiot & wife Ann (Belin)
GEN. CHARLES GRATIOT & WIFE, ANN (BELIN)
The son of Charles Gratiot and Victoire (Chouteau), Charles was born in St. Louis on 29 Aug 1786. He attended the military academy at West Point and after graduation was assigned to the Corps of Engineers as a Second Lieutenant. He served throughout the War of 1812-1815 on the Western Frontier and built Fort Gratiot at the foot of Lake Huron in Michigan. He was retired from the Army at the end of 1838 and from 1840 to the time of his death was a clerk in the General Land Office.

He was married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Ann Belin who was born 08 Nov 1797 and they were the parents of two daughters, Mary Victoria and Julia Augusta. He died in St. Louis on 18 May 1855, and his widow on 26 Dec 1886.

 
Julia (Gratiot) Chouteau 1824-1895
JULIA AUGUSTA (GRATIOT) CHOUTEAU
1824 - 1895
Daughter of Charles and Ann (Belin), Julia was born on 24 Sep 1824 and married Charles Pierre Choutea on 27 Nov 1845 - he being the son of John Pierre Chouteau and Emilie (Gratiot), the latter being Julia's aunt. The couple had eight children: Emilie Ann "Mimi", wife of John Henshaw; Pierre who married Lucille M. Chauvin; Mary Victoria who died in her infancy; Charles Gratiot who died at age five; Ann Victoria "Nannie" who married David D. Johnson; Henry Belin; Charles Gratiot who died in his infancy; and Maria J. who was the wife of Edward V. Papin.

Julia died in St. Louis on 03 Aug 1895 and her husband in Pierremont on 05 Jan 1901.

 
Emilie (Gratiot) Chouteau
EMILIE (GRATIOT) CHOUTEAU
1792* - 1862
Born in St. Louis on 30 Oct 1792, Emilie was the daughter of Charles Gratiot and Victoire (Chouteau). On 15 Jun 1813 she married John Pierre "Cadet" Chouteau, the son of Jean Pierre Chouteau and his first wife Pelagie Kiersereau who at the age of nineteen had become acquainted with his family's business in fur trade and after his father's death, took over the operations.

Emilie was the mother of Emilie Chouteau who married John F.A. Sanford; Julia who married William Maffitt; Pierre Charles who died in his infancy; Charles Pierre who married Julia A. Gratiot; and Benjamin Wilson Chouteau. She died in St. Louis on 24 Aug 1862 and her husband's death followed not long after on 09 Sep. 1865.

Note: Most sources indicate she was born in 1792, but headstone indicates 1974.
