ELIZABETH (MC DOWELL) BENTON
1794 - 1854
The daughter of Colonel James McDowell and Sarah (Preston), Elizabeth was born in Rockbridge Co., Virginia on 08 Jul 1794. She married Senator Thomas Hart Benton on 21 Mar 1821, and was the mother of Elizabeth, wife of William C. Jones; Jessie, wife of John C. Frémont; Sarah, wife of Richard T. Jacob; Susan, wife of Baron Gauldree Boiléau, and two sons John Randolph and James McDowell Benton who preceded them in death.

In 1844 Elizabeth suffered a stroke of paralysis and from that time her husband was never known to go to any place of festivity or amusement. Betsy died rather suddenly in Washington D.C., on 10 Sep 1854 in the absence of her husband, who was either in or on the way to St. Louis.
