ALLEGHENY VALLEY PENNSYLVANIA

[BARNHART]

Before living in Butler county, Pennsylvania, this family had probably lived in Westmoreland county, in the same state.

The Barnharts were among the first settlers near Millerstown, Butler county, in the township of Donegal and Fairview.

Rudolph Barnhart, probably a grandson of the immigrant ancestor, came from Westmoreland county to Fairview township, Butler county, in 1974, but retured for the winter.

Among the settlers in the vicinity of Millerstown, in the following year, were Jacob Barnhart Sr. and Jacob Barnhart Jr.

This presence of two persons of the same name, in the same place, and at the same time, with but scanty information concerning the wives and families of the early Barnharts, and almost no detailed knowledge with regard to dates and ages, is a fruitful cause of possible error.

The following is given as a probable account, it seems to us, than that which would make Jacob Sr. the father of John, born in 1800; yet the chance of confusion from duplication of names must be remembered in reading it.

(1) Jacob Barnhart, the founder of this family, was born in Germany.

In 1795 he settled in Donegal township, Butler county, Pennsylvania.

As Rudolph Barnhart who came to Butler county in 1794, seems to have been a grandson, Jacob Barhart must have been a advanced age at the time of the settlement in Butler county.
