Antennas
2 meter 450 foot Rhombic-built in 1980s
in Bowie
I made a rhombic for 2 meters that was 450 feet down
the center & 40 feet
accross the mid section once. It was only 40 feet
high off ground & supported by trees with
pulleys and insulated where the supports held the
main line. I could pull the
main lobes in when listining to beacons (144Mc.) up
& down the East coast. It was made
from #22 hook up wire. It was fed by a coax balun
& uses 50 ohm coax where the
close end was over the house roof. As I remember,
the termination resistance
should have been around 500 ohms without balun. It
was almost as good as a 14
ele beam I had in tropo, but of course could not rotate.
It might have been
better in longer distances, but was never tested.
There was no termination
resister, so was bi-directional.
There were several stations in US & Australia that
used 2 meter rhombic
antennas for moon bounce. One had in mid West had
stacked several for 2 meters.
