Stanton joined with her friend ¤Lucretia Mott and other women in Seneca Falls
to organize the first Women's Rights convention (1848).
It was shortly after the Seneca Falls convention that Stanton met
¤Susan B. Anthony, and they soon became good friends and a powerful team.
Stanton, the better orator and writer, scripted many of Anthony's speeches.
Anthony, with no domestic ties, became the movement's organizer and tactician.
They remained close friends until Stanton's death some fifty years later.
Following the Civil War, Stanton and Anthony opposed the ratification of the
Fourteenth (citizenship) and Fifteenth (voting rights) Amendments to the US Constitution on the basis of their conviction that these amendments must include extending rights to women as well as enfranchising the recently freed Negro men.
For them it was an all or nothing question, ultimately causing a split in the feminist movement. née CADY, Elizabeth
